With your financial help we can develop new treatments for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases as well as new treatments that can reverse drug addictions. Although most of our scientific work was done in the heart, this work provided the key pieces of knowledge that made it possible to discover the brain network which controls cognition and fluidity of the motions. We can transform this knowledge into new treatments for neurodegenerative disorders, but we need your financial help. Together we can make a difference for millions of people world wide.

Many critically acclaimed scientists might ask: Who are these people who never before worked in the brain to tell us that they discovered a protein network, controlling memory and cognition? Our response is simple: This research would have not been possible to conduct in the brain. Because the GIRK channels in the neurons are located in the dendrites, they are not amenable to the recordings we were able to obtain in the cardiac cells. Most importantly, we started with a simple question and then we followed the data. This is not a popular approach in today’s hypothesis driven biomedical research. However, in order to construct a viable hypothesis one needs to know the substrate of memory and cognition and this is an unsurmountable task. Instead, we followed a dream. Everyone who has had a recurring dream of a fictional place does not need convincing that such recurring information is written somewhere in their brain. For this information to be evoked, however, you also need a tool that can translate the stored biochemical data into a complex biological response. When we encountered the complex electrophysiological language of the single GIRK channels in the heart, we recognized the potential of these molecules as such tools. Therefore we spent more than a decade deciphering the GIRK language and identifying the protein network which controls this language.

Our critics might object to our road to the discovery of the brain network, but this does not change its potential for the development of new treatments for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Therefore, we wanted to share our knowledge with the people affected by these disorders and their families. Your financial support can make these new treatments a reality. You can designate your contribution to a specific area of research (Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and drug addictions) and we will honor your designation.
